I was personally surprised with these results. I didn't expect all my subjects to ace the eye test or for them to get the exact same before and after playing video games.
My hypothesis is correct, action video games don't harm or help your vision, it remains neutral in accordance with my observations. But, I believe that the only reason this happened is because the effects, positive or negative, didn't have enough time to kick in during the time I tested them. Next time I will do it every day with my subjects for 2 weeks to see if there are any effects.
Lets say that I did test them for two weeks, 45 minutes each time. The results would be very different. A National Geographic article in 2009(2) stated that if you play action video games, your vision will improve. Obviously if you play for 8 hours a day, everyday, your vision will get destroyed. So how much time should you play them for? A study out of Oxford University in 2014(3) answers this. They explain it like this, "While a little can be good, too much is a problem." What they mean by that is that if you play video games for less than one hour a day, the effects are positive for your vision. When you play for 1-3 hours a day, there are no positive or negative effects for your vision. But if you exceed three hours, the results are negative for your vision.
In conclusion, video games are scientifically proven to help improve your vision. Video games also help improve your cognitive skills, hand-eye-coordination, and problem solving but vision probably is the biggest benefit. Although video games do help your vision, remember, if you play too much it is actually bad for you. Thank you for taking the time to read this website and I hope you enjoyed it!
